There was panic in Ikirun, headquarters of Ifelodun Local Government Area of Osun State, as two girls said to be related were struck dead by lightning on Sonday.

WITHIN NIGERIA gathered that the incident occurred in the Ogo-Oluwa area of Orisa Elejin community around 4:30 pm on Sunday, August 29.

A resident, Mary Ojuolape, told the Nation that the young girls were crossing a field in the area during a light rain when they were struck.

“They were crossing a school football field around the Ogo-Oluwa area when they were struck down by lightning,” she said.

Another resident named Dayo said there was a great crowd that gathered around the bodies of the girls.

“I don’t know their names but they were siblings. The incident is sad and the entire community is sad over the incident,” he added.

The Chairman of the Ifelodun Local Government Area, Hassan Okanlawon, who confirmed the incident, said the girls were found dead on the playground of an Arabic school after lightning struck.

Okanlawon said the deceased were living with their grandmother in the area, adding that when he visited the scene he was told the two girls were asked to buy ingredients to cook dinner.

“On their way, lightning struck them and they both died on the spot. They were living with their grandmother. One of them was from Delta State and the other, Ondo State. I was told that we could not immediately remove their bodies. They said Sango adherents must perform some rites. I was informed that some Sango worshippers from Ede were on their way to the scene,” the LG boss said.
