The government of Niger state has disclosed plans to engage over 4000 political appointees in 2022.

This was disclosed by the aecretary to the Niger State Government, Ahmed Matane during the 2022 budget defence at the House of Assembly, in Minna.

According to him, those to be appointed would be responsible for the management of political activities ahead of the 2023 elections.

He said, “We are hoping that next year, with the heat of political activities coming up, there may be political appointments for political activities and management.”

According to him, the state currently has a total of 5,113 political appointees.
He added that there is a plan to increase this number by 2022.
He stated that categorisation of political appointees has been done in the state with the salaries of the Governor, Deputy Governor, former Governors, former Deputy Governors, Commissioners and Members of the House of Assembly removed from the payroll of the civil servants and placed under the office of the SSG.

“We have done categorisation of political appointees in 2021 and we had 4,470 initially but the actual number by September ending rose to 5,113. What we are anticipating in 2022 will be 9,439,” the SSG explained, adding that over N1.7bn was paid to them in 2021.
