Gunmen on Friday morning attacked the Mbieri Divisional headquarters situated in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.

This is the fifth Divisional Police headquarters gunmen had burnt since they renewed their hostilities in the state in the past one month.

Gunmen burnt Okwelle, Omuma, Isu and Umuguma Divisional Police Headquarters, killing two policemen, burning several vehicles and releasing inmates in the last one month in the state.

In the latest attack, indigenes told newsmen that the attackers arrived at Mbieri Divisional headquarters around 3 am and opened fire on the police facility.

An indigene of Mbieri living near the police divisional headquarters said that the attack was “frightening”.

The source said, “We didn’t sleep last night. They arrived around 3 am and the sounds of gunshots kept us awake till dawn. This is so scary.”

Another source told PUNCH that the hoodlums threw explosive devices at the police station.

He said, “The armed robbers bombed the police station but luckily it was not maximum destruction. The whole building was not affected. Part of the roof was affected.”

When contacted, the police spokesperson for the command, Micheal Abattam, said that it was a foiled attack.

Abattam said that Petrol bombs the attackers threw at the police formation only affected a part of the roof, adding that one vehicle was also affected.

He said that investigation had commenced with a view to arresting the suspects.
