Kano State Government has provided N550 million worth of food stuff and other items for a free feeding programme during the Ramadan period.

The free feeding programme was introduced by Governor Umar Ganduje when he first became governor in 2015 and has been sustained as a traditional way of reducing the hardship that usually confronts the poor during Ramadan.

Acting Governor Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna made this known when he inaugurated the programme for the 140 centres across the eight metropolitan local government areas.

“The purpose of this programme, which has been a tradition and sustained since 2015 by the Ganduje administration, is to reduce hardship faced by the less privileged so as to enable them conduct Ramadan fasting with comfort and ease,” Gawuna said.

The acting governor urged members of the Ramadan free feeding committee to discharge their duties well and use the funds judiciously.

Commissioner for Local Government, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo, assured that they would ensure regular supervision of the programme across the 140 centres.

The deputy governor, also in his statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Hassan Musa Fagge, appreciated the State Government for sustaining the gesture.

He said “the food items provided for the exercise include 4,300 bags of rice, 1,310 bags of millet, 865 bags of beans, 1,310 bags of sugar, 2,240 cartons of macaroni, 2,940 Jerry cans of groundnut oil, 2,160 jerry can of palm oil, 52,000 sachet water and other items.”
