Timothy Owoeye, the Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly has disclosed that adopting an e-parliament by the Assembly would serve as a bridge that will link the people with their representatives.

Owoeye also disclosed that the objectives of the 7th Assembly is to bequeath a better legislature.

This was made known on Tuesday by the speaker in Osogbo at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Osun State House of Assembly and the Impact Development Initiative.

Owoeye, who reaffirmed that e-parliament was very necessary in modern day legislation, added that more importantly, e-parliament is considered to be the engine room for other components of the legislative agenda.

Owoeye held that it will also enhance parliamentary transparency, accessibility and accountability.

“In order to carry out the functions of legislation, representation and oversight more effectively, legislators would be in constant communication, consultation, interaction and dialogue with their constituents.

“In addition, it will also enhance democratic practices and inclusive governance and thus bridge the massive gap and mitigate the weak relationship between the legislators and their constituents.

“In a nutshell, the development of e-parliament will, among other things, facilitate ease of doing parliamentary business, strengthen the relationship between the legislature and the public and above all bridge the gap between legislators and their constituents,” he stated.

Earlier, the KDI Team Lead, Bukola Idowu had revealed that technology makes the democratic process more effective, transparent, accessible and accountable, adding that e-parliament would be instrumental in strengthening citizens’ engagement

He also commended the Osun legislature for passage of the Osun State Youth Development Commission (OYDC) bill into law.
