Mohammed Barkindo, the late secretary-general of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), has been laid to rest in his hometown of Yola, Adamawa State.

Barkindo’s body arrived in Nigeria on Wednesday, draped in the country’s colours. A sizable number of people gathered to pay their respects to the deceased.

The final prayer for him was held at the Yola Central Mosque.

Barkindo, 63, died on Tuesday night hours after meeting President Muhammadu Buhari in Aso Rock, Abuja.

At the meeting, Buhari described him as a worthy ambassador of the country.

The president said posterity will remember him kindly for making the nation and himself proud during his six years of meritorious service at the helm of affairs as the fourth OPEC secretary-general from Nigeria.

Buhari directed the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and the NNPC to mobilise the oil and gas industry to organise a befitting welcome reception in honour of Barkindo.
