Police in Gombe state has apprehended a Kano man identified as Mustapha Usman for having counterfeited naira notes and cheating an unsuspecting Point of Sale vendor.

This was made known on Monday by the police spokesperson, Mahid Abubakar while parading the suspect at the command headquarters.

The PPRO said Usman deceived a POS vendor, Munir Mohammed, that the nylon contained original notes, stressing that the supposed money turned out to become paper cut into currency size.

The unsuspecting vendor performed the transaction before he realised that Usman had scammed him with fake notes.

According to Abubakar, the Command under Ishola Babaita as commissioner had been empowered to rid the state of criminal elements, noting that people with criminal tendencies would no longer thrive in the state.

He said, “Usman from Shagari quarters, Kano State at 11:30 pm on 27th July 2022 defrauded one Munir Mohammed of Pantami who operates a POS. He reported to Pantami division that the suspect came to his shop to ask that he deposits N50,000 into an account and gave him two wrappers of counterfeited money, only for the POS operator to discover that the two wrappers were not money but papers. We recovered the money (paper) as an exhibit.”

Also paraded was a 23-member militia group, also known as Kalare. Abubakar said they were arrested following what he described as conspiracy and unlawful disturbance of public peace of residents.

The Public Relations Officer said the 23 thugs were arrested by the police tactical team, revealing that they were caught around the Malam Inna area of the metropolis.

He added that they would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation, stressing that the command has zero tolerance for thuggery.

Abubakar said, “The team arrested the same 23 suspected thugs who are terrorising the said area and some other parts of Gombe town. Some dangerous weapons recovered from them include 15 cutlasses, two daggers, one axe, and five sticks.”
