More than 3,000 firearms found in the Niger Delta have been turned over to the National Center for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW).

The National Coordinator, Abba Dikko made the announcement, in a statement issued by the Head of Communication, Air Commodore Ewejide Akintunde.

The retired major general revealed that Operation Delta Safe removed various types of weapons (OPDS).

OPDS, a Joint Task Force operating in the six South-South states, is made up of military personnel.

Representatives from the Defense Headquarters, the Nigerian Police Force, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, and others observed the handover ceremony.

OPDS Commander, Rear Adm. Aminu Hassan, who represented DHQ, made the presentation to the NCCSALW.

The weapons include AK-47 rifles, FN rifles, Beretta rifles, G3 rifles, pump action rifles, and several brands of pistols.

Others are Sub-Machine Guns (SMGs), General-Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), locally fabricated rifles, and ammunition of various calibres.

Dikko said the centre would aggregate all weapons recovered from the public and manage the stockpile ahead of destruction.

The NCCSALW has the mandate of retrieving illicit small and light weapons in the custody of arms-bearing agencies in Nigeria.
