The Adamawa State House of Assembly has directed concerned authorities to remove a vexatious hippopotamus from a reservoir of Kiri Dam in Shelleng Local Government Area.

The directive was consequent upon three resolutions passed by the state assembly on Monday in response to the reported killing of a fisherman by the said hippopotamus.

The resolutions were directed to the state Ministry for Environment, the Ministry of Livestock and Aquaculture, and the Ministry of Water Resources.

The Assembly directed the ministries to visit the Kiri Dam, created from River Gongola at Babban Daba in Kiri, to fish out the hippopotamus said to have been attacking fishermen in the river.

The Assembly also mandated its relevant standing committees to liaise with the relevant ministries to visit and sympathize with the family of the victim who was killed.

The resolution of the Assembly followed a matter of urgent public importance raised by the member representing Shelleng constituency, Abubakar Isa during Monday’s plenary following the recent attack by the hippopotamus, resulting in the death of the unnamed fisherman.

After various contributions on the matter by the members representing Yola South, Verre, Guyuk and Song constituencies, Speaker of the Assembly, Aminu Iya Abbas, put the resolutions for the adoption of the prayers into voice vote and was supported by the lawmakers at the sitting.

He, thereafter, directed the clerk of the Assembly to communicate the resolutions to all relevant authorities for further action.
