The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has decided to extend its ongoing strike, after series of meeting on Sunday.
The decision was taken after the National Executive Council meeting at the union’s headquarters at the University of Abuja on Monday morning.
ASUU had declared the commencement of a strike on Monday, February 14, 2022, at the University of Lagos.
Although some State universities are already pulling out of the strike, a development which has been criticised by ASUU.
Recall that the ASUU President, Professor Osodeke had appeared on Arise TV where he addressed some issues regarding the ongoing industrial action embarked upon by ASUU over six months ago.
Speaking about some State universities that recently pulled out of the struggle, the ASUU president said, “talk about important universities not those quacks. They’re not part of our strike”.
The development has triggered backlash from some State universities and concerned Nigerians who lambasted the ASUU president for allegedly naming State universities ‘quack’.
However, speaking on Saturday, the ASUU president debunked the report saying he was misquoted by the media.
According to Osodeke, he was referring to only three universities owned by State governments which are currently not on strike.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government had last week insisted on a no-work-no pay policy against the striking academics, a development that angered the executive of the union led by Prof. Emmanuel Osokode.
