The Mubi North Local Government in Adamawa State says it has hired the services of 100 physically fit men to act as members of the neighborhood vigilante group in what appears to be a community police structure.

The council’s chairman, Alhaji Suleiman Yahaya, revealed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola on Thursday.

Increasing community policing, he stated, would improve security and ensure peaceful coexistence in the area. He also vowed that the government would not give up on protecting people’s lives and property.

Yahaya emphasized that peace was essential for the advancement of humanity and that the idea was also intended to stop herder-farmer clashes, which had since been brought under control.

According to him, the council has procured and distributed no fewer than 80 motorcycles, brand-new patrol vehicles, torchlights, rain boots and raincoats to the vigilante group to boost their performance.

“We have placed them on a monthly allowance as we also provide them with foodstuff to motivate them,” he said.

In a related development, the council chairman said his administration had constructed seven roundabouts covering 2.5 kilometres across eleven electoral wards in Mubi metropolis.

He said the initiative was to decongest the town from heavy traffic and vehicular movement.
