Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide, has asked the Central Bank Governor (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, not to extend the deadline for the phase-out of old notes.

WITHIN NIGERIA previously reported that the apex bank had announced that the shelf life of the old N1,000, N500, and N200 Naira notes would expire on January 31st, 2023.

However, the Senate on Wednesday requested an extension until June 30, 2023, to allow Nigerians living in rural areas to comply with the CBN directive.

The extension request follows a motion titled, “Urgent need to extend the withdrawal of old currency from circulation”, raised by the Senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume.

In a tweet on Thursday, Omokri urged Emefiele to conduct himself like a patriot and resist Senate pressure to extend the deadline for phasing out the old notes.

The controversial author stated that the January 31 deadline must be honoured and that those who have saved money for elections must be disappointed.

He wrote:

The CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, must acquit himself like a patriot and resist the pressure from the Senate to extend the shelf life of the old Naira to June 30. The January 31 date must stand. All those who have stockpiled cash for elections must be frustrated!
