Damar Hamlin, a Buffalo defensive back who plays in the NFL for the United States, had a cardiac arrest on the field and was still in critical condition early on Tuesday.
This came after a tackle several hours earlier that forced Buffalo’s crucial Monday night matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals to be postponed indefinitely.
“Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in our game versus the Bengals. His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment,” the Bills said in a statement.
“He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition.”
According to ESPN, Hamlin received CPR on the field while being surrounded by teammates, some of whom were in tears, and hidden from the public view. He suffered an injury while tackling Bengals receiver Tee Higgins during a play that appeared to be routine and not particularly violent.
Shortly after Hamlin was transported to the hospital, the NFL made a statement about his condition; however, neither the league nor the hospital provided any additional information regarding the 24-year-old’s health
The team’s statement was made public prior to its flight’s early Tuesday return to Buffalo. Regarding the game’s future status, there was no update available right away.
