Solomon Arase, a former inspector general of police, has been nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari to serve as the chairman of the Police Service Commission. The president has urged the Senate to review and approve this nomination (PSC).

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, read a letter that conveyed the President’s request on the Senate floor.

According to Buhari, the appointment complied with Section 154 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Arase will take over as the actual Chairman of the PSC if the Senate confirms him, succeeding Musliu Smith, who served as the previous Chairman of the Commission.

Also on Tuesday, Buhari forwarded two names to be confirmed as Resident Electoral Commissioners for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The new appointees are Dr. Mahmuda Isah from Kebbi State whose appointment is for renewal and Dr. Mann Omobayi Alli from Ondo State who is for a new appointment.

The Senate also received from Buhari another communication, seeking the appointment of five members of the Code of Conduct Bureau.

They are Murtala A. Kankia from Katsina State representing (North West ); Zephaniah Ishaku Bulus from Nasarawa State representing (North Central) and Farouq Umar from Yobe State representing (North East).

Others are Abdulsalam Taofiq Olawale from Ondo State to represent (South West) and Prof. Juwayriya Badamasiuy from Kogi State to represent (North Central).

The President urged the Senate to consider and confirm all the appointees in their usual expeditious manner.
