Shehu Sani, a former Kaduna Central legislator, has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to allow the police to distribute new naira notes to the public.

Sani said in a statement on Saturday that because commercial banks have been hoarding the new naira notes, the Police should be given the responsibility.

According to him, the CBN should distribute the new notes to the police for further distribution to the general public.

However, it was noted that the former lawmaker’s statement could have been sarcastic.

The statement has since generated reactions from Nigerians on Twitter. Below are some culled by our correspondent.

@KingsEmpire192: Is there anywhere you see farmers keeping or siting their yams close to their goats???

@Buumakari: Personally I no trust police to entrust them with a task like this.

@lord_amah: The CBN should allocate the new notes to Jehovah’s witnesses members. It will definitely get to us because they closer to the people than the police.

@sanni_amoto: They should also give part to Amotekun and VGN

@IsahUmarLadan1: Police will run away with the money, I trust bank managers than the police! At least the assurance of withdrawing 1k each is certain

@Udomingod: Why can’t CBN list all the names of the Banks & how much was allocated to them daily or weekly and probably the name of the manager in charge of those banks. Let the public knows exactly who are the ones sabotaging its policies. Instead punching into the air with no accountable.

@eighty_abbkr: It should be allocated to NEPA to be shared properly. They know everyone’s house.

@JoshuaOcr: That means you want the new notes to graduate from hoarding to missing.

@greatSO2SO: this is more like taking fowl out of a yam ban only to replace it with a goat.

@Akila20008Akila: Sir,you are the real nollywood actor El-rufai was talking about not Peter Obi,I just can’t stop laughing, you’ve made my day even without the new notes.

@Adunguke1: Aaaaaaaaaah, this will be an own goal oo.

@SardaunanTinki: Comrade what police did to you this morning please.
