Suspected political thugs have set fire to the state High Court in Ebonyi State’s Owutu Edda community.

The news came just 24 hours after the state’s governorship and house of assembly elections ended.

The Registrar of the Court, Mrs Oluchi Uduma, told reporters that the hoodlums stormed the court in the early hours of Tuesday, chanting war songs and setting fire to the building.

She noted that hoodlums had previously attempted to burn down the state High Court but were stopped by security forces.

Uduma also stated that the courthouse, as well as other valuable properties and documents, had been completely destroyed.

She also revealed that the youths of the Owutu Edda community, as well as security personnel, were mobilised but were unable to apprehend any of them.

WITHIN NIGERIA reports that the setting ablaze of the said state High Court at Owutu Edda community in Afikpo South LGA, was allegedly perpetrated by youths who are seriously aggrieved on the conduct of the governorship and House of Assembly elections that took place at the area.

The Chairman of Afikpo South Local Government Area, Mr. Chima Ekuma Nkama, who confirmed the incident, said that the court was burnt beyond repair.

According to him: “It is very unfortunate that the hoodlums launched an attack on the High Court at Owutu Edda community.

“When we went there, the whole place was on fire. We have reported the matter, even the governor, the commissioner of police are all aware.

“We are currently doing our best to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended,” he stated.
