The 49-year-old fisherman identified as Bob Wilson has been killed by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen in Bayelsa State.

The deceased, a native of Akumoni in the Yenagoa Local Government Area was said to be working on his fishing camp in the bush when the armed men shot at and killed him on Monday.

According to PUNCH, another farmer from the community identified as Nyekefamo Jimiro was said to have also sustained gunshot wounds and currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

It was gathered that farmers and fishermen fled the bush after reports of armed attacks by herdsmen spread around the area.

A youth leader in the Okordia clan, Akadumeme Raymond, on Tuesday, alleged that the herdsmen attacked the deceased because he stopped them from grazing on farmlands around his fishing camp.

While describing the killing as barbaric, Raymond said the incident had been reported to security agencies while the corpse had been deposited at a mortuary.

He appealed to the state government to ensure that the killers are brought to book.

The state police spokesman, Asinim Butswat, who confirmed the incident said, “Police detectives have visited the scene and evacuated the corpse to the mortuary for autopsy. An investigation is ongoing.”

WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that a week ago one Alexander Diri, a farmer, was murdered by suspected herdsmen in the neighbouring Zarama community and his corpse was discovered near the Zarama Market junction on the East-West Road.

The incident, however, sparked protest as some angry youths from the area mobilised to the scene and blocked the Zarama-Mbiama section of the East-West Road for several hours.
