The Federal Government has said Small Arms are gradually becoming weapons of mass destruction as they spread havoc on communities.
Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, made the announcement on Thursday in Abuja during a two-day multilateral meeting with Lake Chad Basin stakeholders.
Speaking on ‘Curbing Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons in the Lake Chad Basin Region, the SGF urged stakeholders to prevent arms’ spread.
Mustapha said: “The Spread of small arms in the lake Chad Basin is a major security concern that portends far-reaching consequences for the region.
“It has contributed to the escalation of conflict and violence obstructing the economic and social development of the countries in the region.”
“It is, therefore, imperative that we work together to curb the spread of small arms in the Lake Chad Basin region,” he said.
