Aspirants for the Senate Presidency are said to have stepped down, easing tensions and confusion over the leadership of the 10th National Assembly.

According to sources who spoke to The PUNCH, some of the aspirants have already withdrawn from the race, as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) hopes to release the zoning formula for the National Assembly leadership this week.

WITHIN NIGERIA reports that the party has repeatedly promised to release the zoning formula for the National Assembly leadership after the 2023 general elections.

While lobbying for leadership positions in the two chambers of the National Assembly continues, senators who previously sought leadership positions are now reportedly seeking alternative positions.

Senator Sani Musa (Niger East) declared his candidacy for Deputy Senate President on Friday.

Musa and his North-Central geopolitical zone colleagues also stated that they would not accept anything less than the position of Deputy Senate President.

According to anonymous sources, Jibrin Barau, the senator representing Kano North, has accepted the position of Deputy Senate President.

Similarly, Ali Ndume, the senator representing Borno South, is not interested in the Senate presidency.

He had repeatedly stated that he would pursue the position aggressively only after the party released the zoning formula.

Lawan, who has been telling the party to leave the Senate presidency open, has yet to make an open declaration of candidacy.

However, some supporters have called for Senate leadership to remain stable.
