The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi has announced that any student caught kissing, touching, hugging, or massaging the opposite sex will be rusticated.

The university made the announcement in its revised student handbook.

The revised rules are contained in an internal memo signed by the university’s dean of Students Affairs, Professor U.S. Abdullahi, and addressed to the president of the Students Union Government and all students at the university on April 27, 2023.

The dean warned students and members of the university community not to violate the rules approved at the institution’s 161st regular Senate Meeting on April 13, 2023.

According to the memo REF:ATBU/SAD/SUG/VOL 11/0113, which was posted on the university’s Facebook page, any student found guilty faces one or two semesters of rustication, depending on the offense.

I write to inform you that the University Senate has approved the revised Student Handbook at its 161st Regular Senate Meeting held on Thursday, April 13, 2023,” the memo reads.

The following are extract of the 30 most salient misconducts from the revised Handbook. All students and members of the University community are requested to avoid such types of misconducts.

Unwanted touching, kissing, hugging, massaging, or sitting on the laps of the opposite sex is punishable by two semesters of rustication, according to the memo.

Females with multi-colored hair, dreadlocks, sagging, reckless driving, tattoos, and extra piercing in the nose, eye, and mouth face a one-semester suspension, according to the memo.

Other offenses include wearing tattered jeans, backless clothing, off-the-shoulder clothing, male students’ hair braiding, and bum shorts, among others, which result in a one-semester suspension.
