The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has tasked IGP Kayode Egbetokun, the new IGP, with pursuing Nigeria’s democratic adversaries.

As the 22nd IGP, Egbetokun took over the Force Headquarters on Wednesday after being sworn in. At midday in Abuja, Usman Baba, the former IGP, officially turned over to Egbetokun.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja, HURIWA’s national coordinator Emmanuel Onwubiko encouraged the incoming IGP to defend Nigeria’s democracy by showing zero tolerance for corrupt behaviour.

Egbetokun, he said, has demonstrated excitement for his position and shouldn’t let Nigerians down by abdicating his constitutional duties.

According to him, the new IGP should protect democracy by stopping forgery in INEC.

“Smarting from the ecstasy of his high profile selection as the new IGP, the man, so neatly dressed, spoke glowingly about the expectation of his new higher calling. He showed enthusiasm and made initial pledges of commitments to duty.”

Onwubiko observed that while addressing journalists at the Villa after the ceremony on Tuesday, Egbetokun had expressed eagerness to resume his duties, stressing that he felt like a tiger ready to chase away all internal enemies of the country.

To this end, he urged the new IGP to wade into a petitions sent to him regarding the senatorial election in Ebonyi and probe the damning allegations.
