Governor of Taraba State, Agbu Kefas has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Karim town, headquarters of the Karim LGA, as a result of communal clashes in some parts of the area which has reportedly led to the death of 30 persons.

This was contained in a statement released on Sunday by Yusuf Sanda, chief press secretary to the governor.

He said security agencies have been mandated to ensure strict compliance, noting that any person or group of persons found violating the order would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

“All ward heads, village heads, traditional rulers, and stakeholders in Karim Lamido LGA are advised to take note of the development,” Sanda said.

The development comes weeks after eight persons were killed during a communal clash between two ethnic groups identified as Karimjo and Wurkum in Karim Lamido LGA of the state.

Abdullahi Usman, Taraba police spokesperson had revealed that the clash between the Karimjo and Wurkum tribes started after the chief of the latter community died and his son was installed as the new traditional ruler.

The clash had occurred on the coronation day of the new chief of Karim Lamido community.

The new monarch from the Wurkum tribe was selected by Darius Ishaku, immediate past governor of the state, alongside other traditional title holders to rule the community.

Subsequently, the Karimjo ethnic group started to protest the installation of a new ruler from the Wurkum tribe, arguing that they deserved the stool.
