  • Ogun State Government is confident about hosting the 22nd National Sports Festival in 2024 and is actively seeking talented athletes to represent the state
  • The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Ogun state will play a crucial role in the state’s sports growth

The Ogun State Government is upbeat about hosting the 22nd National Sports Festival in 2024.

Dr. Yusuf Qudus, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youths and Sports, made this known in Abeokuta during a courtesy visit by the newly elected executives of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun state chapter.

Yusuf, who stated that efforts are being made to find the best athletes to represent the state at the biennial event, described the association as a partner who will assist the state in the growth of sports in the state.

He revealed that the state government had dispatched a scouting team to bring back Ogun athletes who are currently representing other states.

While congratulating the new executives, the Permanent Secretary urged members of the association to be objective and fair in their reporting.

The importance of SWAN in the upcoming National Sports Festival cannot be overstated.” “We would like to urge you to report objectively on the state government’s impact on sports development, he said.

Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji, Chairman of SWAN, thanked the state government for winning the hosting rights for the 22nd NSF.

Ogunsiji stated that the ‘Nigerian Olympic’ would increase the state’s internally generated revenue during the festival.

The Chairman also asked the ministry to continue its support for the association.

Labour walks out of meeting with FG

The meeting of the Presidential Steering Committee on Subsidy Palliatives, which was set to take place on Friday, took an unfortunate turn as the Labour team decided to walk out. This decision was made due to their claim of the government team’s lack of readiness.

After the committee’s previous meeting last Wednesday, it was agreed to convene again two days later to receive briefings from three subcommittees. However, when the Nigerian Labour Congress’ (NLC) delegation, led by President Joe Ajaero, arrived at the Chief of Staff’s Conference Room around 5 pm, they found that the necessary personnel to conduct the briefings were absent, leading them to leave the meeting.

The Labour team accused the Federal Government of using these meetings as a pretence to deceive the public, alleging that the government officials who were part of the subcommittees were nowhere to be found.

According to The Nation, the Mass Transit, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Cash transfer subcommittees were supposed to attend and provide information about the measures in place to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on workers.
