  • Rumors of Amusan’s clearance contradicted by World Athletics
  • Decision on Amusan’s participation yet to be announced
  • AIU to decide on Amusan’s eligibility before Championships start

The World Athletics organization has refuted claims that Tobi Amusan, Nigeria’s prominent track athlete, has received approval to compete in the upcoming 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Amusan’s eligibility was questioned due to an ongoing doping investigation by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), leading the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) to exclude her name from the competition.

Although recent rumors suggested that the 26-year-old had been given the green light to participate, the World Athletics body has swiftly contradicted these reports.

“Please be advised, reports that say Tobi Amusan has been cleared to compete in Budapest are wrong,” Nicole Jeffery, World Athletics’ Head of Communications said in a statement.

“No decision has been made in this case yet. When a decision is made, it will be announced by the Athletics Integrity Unit.”

It would be recalled that the World Athletics included Amusan’s name on the entry list for the competition published last week but with a provision that her participation would depend on the outcome of the whereabouts failure charge preferred against her by the AIU.

The AIU is expected to make their decision known before the start of the World Athletics Championships.

Amusan is currently the world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles.

She claimed the title at the last edition of the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, United States of America.
