Sylvia Agu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Imo State, has announced that approximately 2,300 soldiers from three Nigerian army battalions will be dispatched for the gubernatorial election scheduled for November 11th.

The disclosure was made by Professor Agu during a media roundtable and engagement event held in Owerri.

This two-day program, organized by the International Press Centre in collaboration with the European Union, was aimed at involving journalists in discussions about the upcoming election.

The REC mentioned that INEC had received confirmation from Brigadier-General Usman Lawal, the newly appointed Commander of the 34 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, during a meeting with an electoral commission delegation.

This meeting was conducted to assess the army’s readiness for the impending governorship election in the state.

“Insecurity, no doubt, remains an issue. It is, however, a thing of joy that the commander, 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze, has promised to deploy enough security personnel to ensure a hitch-free election in the state,” the REC said.

“Indeed, he promised that over 2,300 soldiers will be deployed to the state, during the 11 November 2023 gubernatorial election,” she added.
