Lagos Assembly Confirms 22 Commissioners, rejects 17

• The state legislative body rejected 17 nominees.
• It’s gathered that the lawmakers had earlier expressed displeasure at the list when it was submitted weeks ago

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Wednesday confirmed 22 out of the 39 commissioner-nominees submitted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

It’s gathered that the lawmakers had earlier expressed displeasure at the list when it was submitted weeks ago.

Those confirmed are: Hon. Layode Ibrahim, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe,  Hon. Bola Olumegbon,  Mr. Idris Aregbe, Ms. Abisola Ruth, Olusanya, Mr. Moruf Akinderu Fatai, Mr. Kayode Bolaji-Roberts, Engr. Abiola Olowu, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih- Awokoya, Mr. Yakub Adedayo Alebiosu, Mr. Lawal Pedro SAN, Mr. Tunbosun Alake, Mr. Gbenga Oyerinde, Dr. Adekunle Olayinka, Dr. Jide Babatunde, Mr. Afolabi Ayantayo, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, Mr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, Mr. Abdulkabir Ogungbo.

Some of the nominees rejected by the lawmakers include former Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi and former Commissioner for Information & Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso.

Also rejected were Dada Cecilia, former Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Sola Hammond, former Special Adviser on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Sam Egube, former Commissioner for Budget and Planning, and Aramide Adeyoye, former Special Assistant, Works & Infrastructure.

Others that were rejected are Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo, Mr. Yomi Oluyomi, Mrs. Folashade Ambrose, Ms. Barakat Bakare, Engr. Olalere Odusote; Dr. Rotimi Fashola, Mr. Sam Egube; Mr. Olalekan Fatodu, Mr. Mosopefolu George, Engr. Aramide Adeyoye, Mr. Seun Osiyemi, Mr Rotimi Ogunwuyi, Dr. Olumide Oluyinka

The rejection of some of the nominees will come as a surprise to many partly because two prominent names on the list were part of Governor  Sanwo-Olu’s cabinet in his first term and mainly because the All Progressive Congress (APC) that’s the ruling party in the state also has an overwhelming majority in the house. The development may point to a strain in the relationship between the executive and the legislature in state.
