Jigawa State government has rolled out palliatives for undergraduate students in some universities.

The Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sport and Culture, Honorable Sagir Musa Ahmed stated this on Wednesday while briefing newsmen on the resolution of the Executive Council presided over by Governor Umar Namadi.

He said the State Executive Council approved the sum of One Hundred and Sixty-Seven Million, Twenty-Four Thousand, Nine Hundred and Fifty Naira (N167,024,950.00) for the payment of registration fees to undergraduate students of four universities.

According to him, “the State Executive Council has approved the payment of registration fees in respect of the Jigawa State undergraduate students studying different courses at Federal University, Dutse, FUD, Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Kano State University of Technology (KUST) and University of Maiduguri.”

He said the decision was in line with the present administration’s policy to assist parents with low income to cope with the increase in registration fees for their children.

“The Council has also approved the review of bursary scholarship for the Jigawa State Indigenes with immediate effect and the timing of the bursary payment should be at the beginning of every session,” he said.

He added that the State Executive Council has also approved the sum of N3,848,000.00 for additional procurement of food items for distribution across the 27 LGAs in the State as a measure to reduce hardship caused by the fuel subsidy removal.

Findings by Daily Post  revealed that less than 5 per cent of the State’s population benefits from palliatives.

According to Governor Umar Namadi during the flag off of the distribution, the target beneficiaries are the most vulnerable ones in the society.
