  • The NLC also resolved to embark on a mass protest and rally in Imo State within September
  • The NLC raised the alarm over what it described as renewed onslaught by the government and its agents against labour unions

The Nigeria Labour Congress said on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, that it will begin a two-day warning strike because it believed the government had not done enough to mitigate the impact of the elimination of subsidies for Premium Motor Spirit, more commonly known as petrol.

The labour centre organised a countrywide demonstration earlier in August against the Bola Tinubu administration’s alleged “anti-poor” policies towards Nigerians.

The price of PMS increased to N610 per litre when the subsidy was eliminated on May 29, 2023. Eventually, the cost of living rose as a result of the fuel price increase.

Although the Tinubu administration set up committees to plan out the rollout of palliatives for workers, the labour centre noted that the committee had yet to come up with the plans.

A member of the NLC national body in a terse message said, “There will be a warning strike starting from Tuesday. The national body will issue a notice soon.”
