The Federal Government has revealed why it’s fiercely promoting a move away from conventional asphalt road to concrete ones.

The government said its agitation for the ubiquitous adoption of concrete roads is spurred by the cost-effectiveness and durability offered.

Umahi stressed that the decision to promote concrete roads is in tandem with the federal government’s commitment to optimising infrastructure investments and ensuring sustainable development across the country.

While inspecting the construction of the Akure-Ado Ekiti road, he stated that all ongoing road projects across the country that are not more than 20 percent done, will be redesigned to concrete pavement.

“A very important thing that I must let you know is the issue of the introduction of concrete technology on our roads.

“My argument is that you see a lot of roads that are built on concrete with a shelf life of 50 years.

“Not only that, you find out that we are having so much pressure on the Naira; the importation of bitumen is putting a lot of pressure on the Naira, so cement has a local content; almost everything we need is not produced in Nigeria.”
