  • Taiwo Akinkunmi recently passed away in Ibadan, Oyo State
  • The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammad Idris, led a government delegation to visit Akinkunmi’s family in Ibadan

The government expressed deep appreciation for Akinkunmi’s role and acknowledged that his design remains irreplaceable.

The Federal Government has acknowledged that it has not yet found a successor who can match the significant contribution made by the late Taiwo Akinkunmi to the nation.

Akinkunmi, a native of Ogun State, gained recognition as the designer of the Nigerian flag. He created the flag during his studies abroad before Nigeria gained independence in 1960.

Recently, Akinkunmi passed away in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. In light of this, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammad Idris, led a Federal Government delegation to visit the deceased’s family in Ibadan on Monday.

During the visit, Idris, speaking on behalf of the Federal Government, expressed deep appreciation for the remarkable efforts of the late Akinkunmi.

He said: “We are here to console the family on behalf of Mr President. Pa Akinkunmi’s role cannot be forgotten. It is a symbol that we have yet to find a replacement for. He designed it when he was in his 20s, and he lived for more than 60 years after he designed it. Mr President received the news of his death. We want to identify with the family and the people of Oyo State.

“We came to tell them that the Federal Government identifies with them and the people of Oyo State and to say that the Nigerian government will stand by them.”

Remi Akinkunmi, who spoke on behalf of the family, thanked the delegation and expressed gratitude for the visitation.
