Police identify, detain officers caught on video inflicting injuries on woman In Rivers state

The allegations against the officers included physical assault on the woman, resulting in injuries to her face and mouth

  • Previously, an investigation had been launched by the police in Rivers State, situated in the south-south region of Nigeria, after the video surfaced, depicting an incident where police officers reportedly mistreated a woman
  • The viral video prominently displayed the woman with a bleeding mouth, and one of the police officers, believed to be responsible for the injury, was seen filming the scene

On Monday, the Nigerian Police Force announced that they have successfully identified all the officers featured in a widely circulated video depicting an alleged assault on a woman in Rivers State.

Previously, the police in Rivers State, located in the south-south region of Nigeria, had initiated an inquiry into the viral video, which portrayed a woman reportedly subjected to mistreatment by police officers.

The accusations against the officers included allegations of physically harming the victim, resulting in injuries to her face and mouth.

In the video that gained widespread attention, the woman’s bleeding mouth was visible, with one of the policemen, purportedly responsible for the injury, filming the scene. Other officers were seen searching her vehicle, while some were accompanied by individuals who seemed to have intervened.

In a subsequent update shared on their X account, previously known as Twitter, on Monday, the police confirmed that the officers seen in the viral video are now under custody as part of an ongoing investigation. They also pledged to conduct a fair and thorough inquiry into the matter.

“We want to inform our esteemed friends that the police officers allegedly involved in the incident from the video have been identified and are now in custody as part of our ongoing investigation. We are committed to ensuring a fair and thorough examination of this matter.

“However, to ensure transparency and gather all perspectives, we urgently request the lady seen in the video to please come forward and share her side of the story.
