The Department of State Security Service, DSS, has apprehended the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Aisha Ahmad.

The apex bank chief was reportedly arrested by the secret police over an alleged fraudulent and questionable acquisition of shares in Polaris Bank and Titan Bank (Union Bank).

Ahmad is the deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in charge of financial system stability.

“Ahmad is being interrogated on how $300 million to complete the acquisition of Union Bank was raised by Titan Bank,” Politics Nigeria quoted a source familiar with the development as saying.

However, DSS spokesman, Peter Afunanya, told Channels Television on Sunday that he could not confirm or deny that Ahmad is in their custody or has been invited for questioning.

Speaking on the development, Afunaya stated that in the course of any investigation, people can be invited for questioning, and those invitations are carried out within the ambit of the law.

This is coming about two months after the secret service arrested Ahmad’s former boss at the CBN, Godwin Emefiele. He has been in the DSS custody since then.

Godwin Emefiele was suspended as the governor of CBN on June 9.
