  • The University of Abuja introduces mandatory drug tests for prospective students in collaboration with NDLEA to address drug abuse issues
  • The university announces its plan to offer new academic programs, including Nursing, Media and Communication Studies, Pharmacy, Tourism and Hospitality, and Agric Engineering

Prof Abdul-Rasheed Na”Allah, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, has stated that students who wish to study must first undergo and pass a drug test.

Prof Na’ Allah stated that the institution is interested in learning about students’ drug status to assist them in becoming drug-free.

At the 27th Pre-Convocation briefing on Wednesday in Abuja, he stated that they were collaborating with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to assist students involved in drug abuse and rehabilitate them so that they do not become a nuisance after graduation.

The Vice-Chancellor announced that 7900 students, including 100 PhDs, 326 academic Masters, 346 Professional Masters, and 7,128 undergraduates, would graduate at the Convocation on Saturday, October.

He stated that 40 students will graduate with a First Class, 474 with a Second Class Upper, 944 with a Second Class Lower, 174 with a Third Class, and One Pass degree.

He did, however, state that the University has prohibited the Pass degree in the future.

Prof. Toyin Falola of the University of Texas at Houston will also be awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Letters for his contributions to the development and growth of UniAbuja and other African universities.

The Vice-Chancellor stated that the university has evolved into a global university by offering various languages, such as Japanese, French, and Portuguese.

He stated that while efforts were being made to incorporate some foreign languages into degree programs, the varsity has made it mandatory for every student to study and pass a foreign language before graduation.

While noting the University’s efforts to achieve its mandate, he stated that the varsity has begun fundraising from alumni and philanthropists and identifying foundations that will assist in sponsoring research, training, and other activities.

He also revealed that the National Universities Commission had approved 26 new academic programs.

According to him, the university will now offer some courses beginning with the academic year 2023/2024.

Nursing, Media and Communication studies, Pharmacy, Tourism and hospitality, and Agric engineering are among the courses available.
