Bashir Adeniyi, the acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), conveyed the NCS’s dedication to putting an end to the unrestricted importation of goods into the country during a press conference in Abeokuta on Friday.
Adeniyi stressed the importance of heightened commitment from the service to combat the illicit activities of smugglers.
He underscored that these actions by smugglers hindered the country’s ability to generate sufficient revenue to sustain its operations. Adeniyi emphasized the intent to boost the nation’s revenue and collaborate closely with relevant agencies, particularly the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
“We are committed to checking the influx of illicit goods and make the society safer for Nigerians,” Mr Adeniyi said.
Mr. Adeniyi issued a stern warning to smugglers, urging them to cease their actions, as these actions would ultimately have adverse effects on the country’s economy.
He then encouraged Nigerians to favor locally-made products, aiming to bolster the nation’s currency and promote the growth of industries. He emphasized the need to develop a preference for domestically produced goods, fostering the growth of local industries and enhancing employment opportunities within the nation.
Mr. Adeniyi additionally called upon local communities to assist the NCS in their efforts against smugglers by providing crucial information. He appealed to these communities to prevent smugglers’ access and refrain from offering them protection.
