  • The NYSC Director for North-East Nigeria expressed concern over employers rejecting corps members, emphasizing the importance of their acceptance
  • He called on employers to provide welfare provisions and urged state governments and local councils to support the NYSC program

In a troubling development, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has voiced its concerns regarding the rejection of corps members by certain employers in the North-East region of Nigeria. Mr. Garinvwa Ishaya, the NYSC Director overseeing the region, addressed this issue during a one-day Corps Employers’ Forum held on Monday in Yola.

The forum centred around the theme, “Deepening Corps Employers’ Participation towards Improved Welfare And Security of Corps Members.”

Expressing his dismay, Mr. Ishaya highlighted that this trend is disheartening for the corps members and the NYSC. He stressed the importance of providing enabling environments for corps members at their places of primary assignment to enable them to contribute effectively to the social and economic development of the country.

Mr. Ishaya emphasized the core mission of the NYSC, which is to add value to Nigeria’s socio-economic development and promote national unity. He passionately appealed to employers to always welcome and accept corps members assigned to their organizations, contributing to the prosperity of the NYSC and the nation.

Furthermore, he called on employers to fulfil their statutory obligations by providing welfare provisions for corps members, including covering their transportation and accommodation expenses.

In addition to the responsibilities of employers, Mr. Ishaya urged state governments to step in by providing decent accommodation for corps members. He also sought local council chairmen’s support in advancing the NYSC’s objectives.

The NYSC North-East zonal office oversees the states of Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, Yobe, and Borno. The rejection of corps members by employers is a matter of great concern, and addressing this issue is crucial to ensure the NYSC program’s success and its members’ well-being.
