  • The federal government, led by Minister Betta Edu, initiated the construction of resettlement homes for IDPs in Benue State
  • The project aims to provide dignified housing for displaced individuals, aligning with President Tinubu’s agenda, with an emphasis on food security

In a significant move, the federal government has commenced the construction of resettlement homes for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Benue State, signaling a commitment to improving the living conditions of those affected.

Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, conducted the foundation laying ceremony on Thursday at the Mbagwen community in Makurdi Local Government Area. She conveyed the government’s dedication to providing a dignified life for IDPs, emphasizing President Bola Tinubu’s concern for those displaced from their homes.

Dr. Edu highlighted the government’s intention to resettle IDPs in proper housing rather than makeshift shelters. She stated, “To all those who have come from the IDP camps to witness this event, this marks the beginning of your journey back to your ancestral homes.”

President Tinubu’s eight-point agenda, particularly focusing on food security, was underscored by Dr. Edu. She emphasized the importance of Benue State in achieving this agenda and the need to ensure that the food basket of the nation does not succumb to hunger and despair. The project’s commencement is viewed as a positive step toward providing a solution to the challenges faced by the displaced population.

Dr. Edu revealed that the houses would be constructed in clusters through direct labor, involving local communities in the project. She assured that the construction would be completed within six months, providing a swift and efficient solution to the housing needs of the IDPs.

Governor Hyacinth Alia addressed the broader security situation in the state, acknowledging challenges beyond herders’ attacks, including issues related to banditry and kidnapping. He highlighted ongoing underground security efforts that have contributed to the relative peace currently enjoyed in the state. The initiative not only addresses housing concerns but also aligns with broader efforts to enhance security and stability in the region.
