Hon. Yusuf Gagdi, a member of the House of Representatives and a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), has asserted his commitment to inquire into how President Bola Tinubu utilized the trillions of naira saved from the removal of fuel subsidy.
Chairing the House Committee on Navy, Gagdi expressed his support for the removal of fuel subsidy, emphasizing that it is essential to hold the government accountable for the allocation and utilization of the saved funds.
In an interview with BBC Hausa, Gagdi stated, “I am one of many Nigerians who support the removal of fuel subsidy because I believe it is a form of theft. I swear that the subsidy is not doing any good for the poor people of Nigeria.”
While acknowledging his backing for subsidy removal, Gagdi underscored the need for transparency in revealing how the savings, totaling 1, 6, and 10 trillion naira during the Buhari administration, were utilized. He emphasized that the Nigerian people deserve tangible evidence of the benefits derived from these substantial savings.
Gagdi outlined his expectations, stating, “If fuel subsidy is removed, the poor should see the results in the form of renovated roads, new schools, new hospitals, and the establishment of new companies. This will create jobs for Nigerians so that they will not have to rely on the government for handouts.”
The lawmaker’s commitment reflects the growing demand for accountability and transparency in the management of public funds, particularly in the context of subsidy removal and its potential impact on the welfare of the Nigerian populace.
