  • The strike is also to protest the battering of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, and some other executives of the congress in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, as well as the pending labour issues in Imo State.
  • Ajaero was arrested by the police ahead of a state-wide protest in Imo, as disclosed by the NLC’s Head of Information, Benson Upah.

Beginning at midnight on November 14, 2023, affiliates of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria were instructed to cease operations nationwide on Monday.

During his Monday speech to journalists in Abuja, TUC President Festus Osifo revealed this.

Until “government at all levels wake up to their responsibility,” according to Osifo, the strike would continue.

Aside from protesting ongoing labour concerns in Imo State, the strike is also a response to the beating of NLC President Joe Ajaero and a few other congress officers on November 1 in Owerri, Imo State.

According to Benson Upah, Head of Information for the NLC, Ajaero was taken into custody by the police before to a state-wide demonstration in Imo.

The governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, accused the labour leader of interfering in state politics, even though the police denied detaining Ajaero and claimed he was just placed in protective custody to avert a mob attack.

Details to come.
