  • Tani Olohun expresses remorse in court, removes video of the incident from social media, and pleads with accusers and Muslim community

Abdulazeez Adegbola, a well-known traditionalist known as Tani Olohun, has appealed to his accusers and the entire Muslim community for forgiveness after being accused of burning the Qur’an and defaming Muslim personalities in Kwara State.

Speaking in court after being granted bail on Thursday, the Isese adherent, also known as Tani Olohun, pleaded with “Alfa Labeeb,” one of the applicants, and the broader Muslim community for his actions.

Expressing remorse, he stated, “I didn’t know that burning the Qur’an is an offence, and when I was told, I immediately removed the video of the incident from my social media handle in less than a minute. I beg all my prosecutors and Muslims all over to forgive me, and I promise I will not repeat such an act of posting negative videos on social media handles.”

Magistrate A.S Adam presided over the court where Tani Olohun is facing trial for two cases. He granted bail in the sum of N2 million and required three sureties in the same amount. Two of the sureties must own a landed property within the court’s jurisdiction or in Oyo State, as ruled by the court.

The cases, brought by Sheikh Labeeb Lagbaji and Modrasat Muhammed led by Professor Abubakar Aliagan, allege that Tani Olohun burned the Qur’an among other offenses. The court adjourned the matter to January 9, 2024.

The complainant’s counsel, Taofeeq Olateju and Y.Y Ajibade, did not oppose the bail application put forward by Tani Olohun’s counsel, Barrister Ademola Banks.

Tani Olohun faces charges in four different cases across three courts in Ilorin for alleged offenses of defamation and burning the Qur’an. His legal journey began with accusations of insulting Ilorin elders, followed by a case brought against him by the Association of Proud Sons and Daughters of Ilorin (Ogo Ilorin). The latest cases were initiated by Sheikh Labeeb Lagbaji and Modrasat Muhammed.
