  • Moghalu stated that the development has threatening implications for Nigerians’ aspirations for democracy

Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Kingsley Moghalu has warned that Nigeria’s judicial and electoral systems are collapsing.

Moghalu stated that the development has threatening implications for Nigerians’ aspirations for democracy.

He spoke in a post on his X handle on Wednesday.

The statement follows the ensuing controversy over the judgement of the Appeal Court which nullified the election of Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State.

WITHIN NIGERIA reported that a certified true copy of the Appeal Court judgement on the Kano State Governorship Election, however, affirmed Yusuf as the duly elected governor.

As indicated in the written judgement, the Court of Appeal set aside the judgement of the Kano election petition tribunal, which upturned Yusuf’s victory, for lacking merit.

Reacting to the development, Moghalu warned that the nation’s judiciary and electoral systems are collapsing.

According to him, those who benefit from systemic failures are often intoxicated by their advantages.

He wrote, “Nigeria’s judicial and electoral systems are collapsing. This has ominous implications for our aspirations for democracy. Often, those who benefit from these systemic failures are intoxicated by their advantage. But, history tells us that longer term, the prognosis isn’t pretty.”
