  • Plateau APC alleges the two-month House of Assembly recess is a tactic to hinder the swearing-in of newly declared APC lawmakers
  • The party suspects a motive to obstruct the incoming APC-led government following the Appeal Court’s decision nullifying PDP lawmakers’ seats

The Plateau State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised concerns, alleging that the two-month recess declared by the state House of Assembly is a strategic move to impede the swearing-in of APC lawmakers recently declared winners by the Appeal Court in the state.

This allegation follows the recent resignation of the former Speaker, Moses Sule, and his deputy, Gwottaon Fom, and the subsequent election of a new speaker, Gabriel Dawang, who hails from the Young Progressive Party (YPP). After Tuesday’s plenary, the newly elected speaker announced the two-month recess.

In response, the APC, through its publicity secretary, Sylvanus Namang, issued a statement expressing suspicion about the motive behind the recess declaration. The party suggests that it might be a plan to obstruct the swearing-in of the newly elected APC lawmakers following the Appeal Court’s decision that nullified the seats of PDP lawmakers in both the national and state assemblies.

The statement implies that the governor may be preparing for a conflict, anticipating the incoming APC-led government. The concern is that the recess could result in a parallel legislature, as the 22 APC members are expected to operate under a “one-man riot gang” as the “Speaker” for the two months.
