  • NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa warns Nigerians against migrating to Canada without proper documentation, citing increasing challenges faced by asylum seekers
  • Dabiri-Erewa emphasizes the importance of legitimate travel with appropriate documentation to avoid unfavorable consequences for Nigerians seeking asylum

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), cautions Nigerians against migrating to Canada without proper documentation. The warning comes amid increasing challenges faced by individuals seeking asylum due to improper travel procedures.

During her visit to a shelter in Brampton, Canada, Dabiri-Erewa expressed empathy for Nigerians residing there and underscored the importance of legitimate travel with appropriate documentation to avert unfavourable consequences.

The spokesperson of NIDCOM, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, conveyed the chairman’s message in a statement on Thursday. Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the growing difficulty faced by those without proper documentation in several countries and urged prospective travellers to reconsider their plans.

“It is just not worth it, more often than not,” she cautioned.

The statement revealed that Vivian Eruka, associated with the Bethel food bank and actively engaged with shelter residents, shared that the Mayor of Brampton had committed to providing an additional 800 beds and shelters for asylum seekers.

Mr. Wale Rabiu, the owner of Matlock Bakery, contributed to the cause by donating hundreds of loaves of bread to the shelter inmates, highlighting the communal effort to support those in need.

In a subsequent phone conversation with Daily Trust, NIDCOM’s spokesperson clarified that Dabiri-Erewa visited one asylum shelter in Canada, emphasizing the presence of numerous such shelters scattered across the country. The warning from the federal government underscores the necessity for Nigerians to adhere to proper immigration procedures when considering relocation to Canada.
