  • Governor Aliyu was taken round the affected portion of the burnt house by some of the family members of the former President.
  • He described the inferno as catastrophic and unfortunate, describing the burnt house as historic not only to Sokoto State but the country as a whole.

The whole rebuilding of former President Shehu Shagari’s first mansion, which was completely destroyed by fire last week, has been overseen by Dr. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, the governor of Sokoto State.

Shortly after touring the burned-out residence on Saturday to determine the full extent of the fire’s damage, the governor issued the decree.

He called the fire tragic and devastating, and the burning mansion historic for both Sokoto State and the nation at large.

“To us, this house is of great historical importance being the first residence of the former Nigeria’s first democratically-elected President Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari.
