  • Kogi State youth stakeholders express discontent over the non-conduct of local government elections, hindering youth participation in governance
  • Stakeholders advocate for consistent and timely local government elections, emphasizing the constitutional importance of youth involvement in political leadership

Stakeholders representing youth activities and youth-focused organizations in Kogi State have voiced their dissatisfaction with the non-conduct of local government elections in the state. They argue that the absence of such elections has deprived young people of opportunities to actively participate in local governance and leadership roles.

This sentiment was articulated in a communique issued following a one-day roundtable discussion held in Lokoja, the state capital. The event, themed “Youths for Leadership,” was organized by Conscience for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution (CHRCR) in collaboration with the Women Trust Fund Nigeria, with support from the MacArthur Foundation.

Stakeholders at the discussion, which included youths, youth-focused organizations, and media representatives, expressed concern that the failure of the state government to establish mechanisms for conducting local government elections before the current elected Council expires on December 14, 2023, goes against constitutional provisions.

Idris Miliki Abdul, the Executive Director of CHRCR, presented a paper titled “Inspiring Youths for Leadership,” while Hamza Aliyu, the Executive Director of Initiative for Grassroot Advancement in Nigeria (INGRA), addressed the “Challenges of Youth in Attaining Leadership Positions and the Way Forward.”

The stakeholders emphasized the importance of consistent and timely local government elections in line with relevant laws and constitutional provisions of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They asserted that this would enhance the platform for youth participation in political governance and leadership.

In addition, the stakeholders called on the media to intensify reporting on youth issues to have a meaningful impact on youth leadership in Kogi State and the country at large. They also urged the youths to leverage their electoral strength to secure elective and appointive positions in the state. Furthermore, they advocated for constitutional amendments to lower the age for voting and eligibility for elective positions.
