  • The UAE commits to establishing humanitarian response stations in Nigeria, reinforcing disaster assistance efforts and addressing poverty, says Dr. Betta Edu
  • Dr. Edu discusses collaboration at COP28, aiming to tackle humanitarian crises, eradicate poverty, and adapt to climate change challenges

Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, revealed that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has committed to establishing humanitarian response stations across Nigeria. This initiative aims to provide swift assistance to victims of disasters, reinforcing the government’s dedication to addressing critical issues.

Dr. Edu, speaking from Dubai after discussions with UAE officials at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), emphasized Nigeria’s appeal for support in handling humanitarian crises linked to insurgencies, particularly in the North East. The collaboration also targets the eradication of persistent poverty in specific regions of the country.

The UAE Red Crescent, equivalent to the Red Cross, is poised to play a pivotal role in building a more robust humanitarian response system nationwide. Dr. Edu expressed optimism, stating, “We have engaged with various levels, including the UAE government, discussing strategies to uplift millions from poverty, in collaboration with the Minister for Tolerance and other key stakeholders.”

Interactions spanned international platforms, involving the World Trade Organisation (WTO) DG and the President of the Islamic Development Bank. These discussions focused on humanitarian response and poverty alleviation programs, showcasing a united front to support Nigeria’s endeavors.

Attributing humanitarian crises and poverty to climate change, Dr. Edu highlighted the link between environmental shifts and the rise of insurgencies, contributing to security challenges. Her ministry’s role at COP28 underscores a commitment to climate change adaptation, seeking support to create employment opportunities and lift people out of poverty, aligning with the principles of the Paris Agreement.

This collaboration signifies a significant step toward a more resilient Nigeria, with the UAE’s support poised to make a lasting impact on disaster response and poverty alleviation efforts.
