In its efforts to address the housing challenges faced by its officers, the Nigeria Customs Service, on Monday, unveiled a groundbreaking initiative providing 5,000 affordable housing units across Nigeria.
Its Comptroller-General, Bashir Adeniyi, who stated this during the commissioning ceremony of COOP Pacesetter Estate at Ajoda in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, said, “A strategic partnership has been formed with the Cooperative Mortgage Bank to establish a sustainable housing solution.
“The collaboration aims to construct 5,000 housing units nationwide, offering a stable foundation for officers and empowering them to invest in their families and future, ultimately enhancing their effectiveness in serving the nation.”
Earlier, the President of the Cooperative Association of Nigeria, Tajudeen Aiyeola, urged state governors to take deliberate actions on low-cost housing for Nigerian citizens.
He emphasised that achieving substantial provision for affordable housing is possible with government interest, encouraging local production of housing materials, cost reduction, and facilitating access to work-based loans.
Aiyeola, therefore, stressed the need for government support and subsidies to benefit Nigerian citizens.
He also urged all agencies in Nigeria to follow suit, acknowledging the Customs Service for initiating programmes that benefit the people.
Also, the state governor, Seyi Makinde, noted that the initiative would contribute to the economic development of the state.
“This aligns with the governor’s commitment to providing housing and other developmental projects. I want to commend the Customs CG for this endeavour and urge everyone to support it,” he said.
