Senator Simon Lalong, who represents Plateau South, expressed disappointment with the military’s justifications for their inaction in the face of violent attacks in the state of Plateau.
On Saturday, Lalong participated in a discussion about a motion that was supported by Senator Diiket Plang, a representative for Plateau Central.
“I heard a report from the military this morning and I was disappointed. [It said] why they didn’t deal with the situation was because of proximity and terrain,” he said.
“There is nothing like terrain in the military.”
The attacks had been brought to the red chamber’s attention by Plang.
A group of armed men attacked 17 settlements in the Plateau state’s Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi LGAs on Christmas eve, killing numerous locals.
The attacks allegedly started on December 23 and went on until December 24, during which time the locals were getting ready for Christmas festivities.
In the process, properties were robbed and houses were destroyed.
Senator Abdul Ningi, who represents Bauchi Central, stated that the attack occurred as a result of a lack of coordination among the security authorities.
“What happened in Bokkos is unprecedented. When you have a catchment of bandits moving at a go. There was a rumour of the attack and the governor tried to make awareness of this attack but he was not taken seriously,” Ningi said.
“We need to urgently call the security agencies to order. There is no synergy.
“The Plateau is in dire need because they are settling over a thousand displaced people. It is a terrible phenomenon. We have forgotten about our humanity.”
Ningi added that any security chief who is not competent should be shown the way out.
