  • The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) maintains the December 31 deadline for 2024 Hajj fare payments
  • NAHCON’s Assistant Director clarifies the stance, emphasizing readiness and the challenge in accurately determining paid individuals amid concerns

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) stands firm on its December 31 deadline for the payment of Hajj fares for the 2024 pilgrimage, asserting that the low turnout in payments will not alter the stipulated cutoff.

In response to a story, that highlighted concerns about the high fare and early payment deadline affecting the commission’s preparations, NAHCON’s Assistant Director of Press, Fatima Sanda Usara, clarified the commission’s stance.

The statement emphasized that NAHCON had consistently communicated its readiness to work with any number of registered pilgrims capable of paying the N4.5 million Hajj deposit by the December 31 deadline. Usara addressed the perceived dilemma, stating, “NAHCON has completed 60 percent of its Hajj preparations.” The real challenge, she explained, lies in accurately determining the number of individuals who have paid the fare.

Usara advocated for the adoption of the Hajj Savings Scheme, citing its potential for better control and planning.

This system would enable NAHCON and each state to track eligible intending pilgrims, and project balances, and streamline preparations more efficiently.

While some managers proposed a deadline extension, citing farmers awaiting harvest, others expressed optimism about last-minute payments from businesspersons. Malam Jalal Arabi, NAHCON’s chairman, emphasized fairness and decisive action in the interest of those who have already paid. He assured that the fare would not exceed the deposit if not reduced and urged state pilgrim welfare boards to promptly remit deposits.

As the deadline approaches, NAHCON remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring a well-prepared and organized Hajj pilgrimage for those who have fulfilled their deposits.
