  • An undercover journalist exposed the NYSC system’s vulnerability, revealing how he manipulated it to secure mobilization on two occasions
  • NYSC spokesperson, Eddy Megwa, acknowledged the exploit, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures to prevent such incidents in the future

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) sheds light on how an undercover journalist successfully manipulated its system, securing mobilization on two separate occasions.

The exposé unfolded when an investigative journalist disclosed obtaining a four-year degree from a university in Benin Republic in under two months. Astonishingly, he was later mobilized for the NYSC, despite having completed his service earlier.

In response, the federal government swiftly banned the validation of degree certificates from Benin and Togo. There are considerations to extend this suspension to tertiary institutions in Kenya, Niger, and other countries.

NYSC spokesperson, Eddy Megwa, addressed the issue on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily, revealing that the reporter exploited the system using different phone numbers.

Megwa clarified, stating, “When the undercover reporter first entered his data, the system rejected him as he had previously served in the scheme. However, he later altered his email and phone number, allowing the system to accept him. Initially posted to Osun State, his actions were driven by a specific motive. We are examining the situation to prevent its recurrence. Our system lacks a database of graduates who have served; we rely on lists provided by universities.”

Regarding future safeguards, Megwa stated, “While it’s not our role to assess certificates, we have invited foreign students, subjecting them to tests to gauge their abilities. This has led to surprising revelations. NYSC, being an elite scheme, demands proficiency in English communication. In 2006, then NYSC DG Brig.-Gen. Yusuf Bomoi encountered a corps member in an orientation camp. When asked about his final project title, the response was incredulous. Subsequent investigation revealed his name was illicitly included in the list of graduates from a specific university.”

This revelation underscores the need for heightened security measures within the NYSC system to maintain the integrity of the mobilization process and uphold the standards of the elite scheme.
