  • Edo Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, expresses deep betrayal by Governor Obaseki’s endorsement of another candidate, citing personal sacrifices and contributions
  • Shaibu, feeling hurt, highlights financial and structural contributions to Obaseki’s administration, questioning the shift in political dynamics in Edo State

Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has voiced his sense of betrayal regarding Governor Godwin Obaseki’s purported endorsement of a different candidate for the upcoming governorship election in the state.

Shaibu, who had been a steadfast supporter of Obaseki and played a pivotal role as the deputy governor, expressed his disappointment during an interview on Arise TV on Wednesday morning. He claimed that he felt betrayed considering the substantial contributions he made to Obaseki’s administration in terms of both political structure and finances.

During the interview, Shaibu stated, “I felt betrayed by the governor because I added value in terms of finances and structure. All the vehicles that were used in 2016 are mine, and in 2020, I added value. I contributed to how we got the ticket in PDP, both in naira and dollars. So, if I said betrayal is an understatement, I feel very hot and betrayed. I sacrificed my entitlement and personal earning to make the system work.”

Shaibu conveyed his hurt over Obaseki’s decision to support an external candidate instead of endorsing him for the governorship position. He emphasized his sacrifice and commitment to the administration, pointing out that Obaseki’s current stance contradicts their shared vision of avoiding a political godfather role in the state.

The deputy governor recalled his dedication to Obaseki’s aspirations, even risking his long-term relationship with Senator Adams Oshiomhole in the process. Despite standing with Obaseki against Oshiomhole, whom he considered a father figure, Shaibu expressed surprise and disappointment that the governor is now aligning with another gubernatorial aspirant.

The unfolding dynamics within the Edo State political landscape are sure to capture the attention of observers as the rift between the governor and his deputy becomes more apparent.
